SCUBA By Jim Neumann SCUBA literally means "self-contained underwater breathing apparatus," and has now been with us for over 50 years. If you are a D/FW resident and want to combine the outdoors with travel and adventure, this is the sport! Sport diving goes from the surface of the water to 120 feet in depth. Your training from a "certified" instructor prepares you for a lifetime of underwater recreation and socializing. By "certified," I mean a NAUI, PADI, or other licensed instructor. To get your C-Card, you must complete a course with written, oral, and practical testing at its completion. This certification card entitles you to acquire a tank of compressed air at a dive shop or location. Without this "air, " you cannot scuba dive. Once certified, D/FW has a plethora of dive shops, trips, and dive sites for you to visit. Many dive sites are within five hours driving of the metroplex. D/FW Airport offers a gateway to the world's best diving. So, who cares if we are in the middle of the prairie, anyway? Every dive trip I have been on has been a treat! I've met many new friends in every age range and background. Descending into crystal blue waters to observe multicolor schools of fish is just one of scores of things to do on a dive. Almost every dive trip offers a bonafide "night life," be it sitting around a campfire at Lake Ouachita in Arkansas, or, dancing 'til dawn at the discos in Cozumel, Mexico. If you have some basic fears that keep you from trying scuba, why not speak with an experienced instructor and find out if some of your apprehension is unfounded? Jim Neumann, a resident of Arlington, Texas, is a certified diver. |
