Bear Creek Park Two
plus miles of soft surface bicycling and hiking nature trails along partially wooded Bear
Creek. One block west of Highway 360 on Ash, turn right on Bear Creek Parkway. Two
pavilions can be reserved. The City of Euless maintains a trail for walking or off-road
biking. It is slightly over two miles and relatively narrow. Good place for beginners and
pretty as it follows Bear Creek but relatively boring and flat for riding. Slow down often
for walkers.
East of Ash on Bear Creek Parkway Euless
817 685-1660
: From Airport Freeway, go north on Highway 360 to Harwood Drive in Euless. Turn left on
Harwood. Turn right (first right) on Bear Creek Parkway. Cross Ash Lane, then see park on
right and left sides of street.
LB Houston Nature Trail Walking trails, featuring birds and wildlife
plus native plants and trees in a woodland and river habitat. Mosquitoes swarm day's end.
Four mile loop for bicycling is good for beginners. L B Houston follows the Elm Fork of
the Trinity River with several access points and covers approximately 300 acres. Short
trails and longer trails are available but all are boggy after rains. Relatively flat with
no rocks, but twisting, narrow, and tight so it helps with your bike skills and handling
techniques. The four mile loop off Northwest Highway is excellent for beginners. DORBA
(Dallas Off Road Bicycle Association) trail is soggy for about a week after rains and the
habitat of many hungry mosquitoes during warm months. Diagonally to west and across street
from National Guard Armory at white gravel parking lot.
Wildwood & California Crossing Dallas
214 670-6244
From Northwest Highway just west of I-35, go south on Luna, then turn on California
Crossing. This huge nature trail is basically between Stemmons Freeway and John Carpenter
Freeway following the Trinity River.
Meridian State Park Meridian State Park is located in 500 acres of
rolling hills about 50 miles northwest of Waco. The lake in the middle of the park was
created when CCC dammed Bee Creek. Fishing, swimming, and boating available plus
campsites, wildflowers, animals, and birds. Mountain Biking: Texas Highway 22 Meridian
State park charges apply.
Directions: From Highway 6 in Meridian, go west on TX 22 to Meridian State Park on right.Northshore Trail of Lake Grapevine Hikers and mountain bikers share this
trail which, although crowded, sometimes littered, and urban, is still worthwhile.
Mountain Biking: Multi-skill, multi-terrain trail. This old motocross run is DORBA built,
shared with hikers, and extremely popular so be prepared for crowds. Runs between
Rockledge Park and Twin Coves Park on the north shore. The west side of trail is more
difficult than east side.
FM 2499 Grapevine
Directions: From TX 26 in Grapevine, go north on Fairway Drive (FM 2499) approximately 2.6
miles to Rockledge Park. Turn left into park.
River Legacy Park Free self-guided nature trails, garden, and
educational tours. Nature walks @ 10am each Saturday, weather permitting, beginning from
back patio. Excellent rollerblading. River Legacy Living Science Center. Call for hours of
Science Center. River Legacy Park follows Trinity River and encompasses 400 acres of woods
and meadow with ponds and riverfront. Paved trails, restrooms. Several pavilions can be
reserved for large groups. Picnic and playground areas. Shaded trails are nice for summer.
Even though park has many flat stretches, the trails do twist through the trees enough to
be fun. Other parts of the park offer some good jumps, but check first to see where you
will land. Trails are not maintained by DORBA.
703 NW Green Oaks Blvd Arlington
817 860-6752
Take Highway 360 south from Airport Freeway or north from I-20. Exit Green Oaks and go
west (Turn right if coming from Airport Freeway, left if coming from I-20). Cross Collins,
then enter park through brick arches on right.
Rowlett Creek Trail This relatively flat trail does provide a few
dips and such along with many curves and twist. The ten mile plus or minus trail also has
an expert section that you should probably walk first. Unfortunately, the waste-treatment
plant adds an undesirable aroma to part of the ride.
Corner of Centerville and Castle Garland
Sister Grove Park Two mile loop for off-road bicycling and hiking in
78 acres of woods, wildflowers, ponds, and grasslands. North of Highway 380 between
Princeton and Farmersville. Only open during daylight hours and locked when not open, even
if you are still in the park. Climbs, sharp turns, and root hops can make this trail quite
challenging. Short beginner run also. Some woods, some open areas.
Farmersville
Take Highway 380 east from McKinney (or east from Princeton). Turn left or north about 14
miles east of McKinney on County Road 559. This is a bridge in the middle of another
bridge. Follow signs to park.
Veteran's Park 103 acre park with hiking and nature trails, paved
trails, restrooms, pavilion that can be reserved, amphitheater, & playground. Also
contains xeriscape garden (a demonstration garden using native & adaptive plants to
conserve water), wildscape garden (a demonstration garden showing how to use wildlife
habitats in your yard), and wildflower area. Trails are not the best but elevation changes
are great! These trails are not kept up by DORBA and there is a fair amount of erosion.
Lots of dead end spurs, also.
SW Corner Arkansas and Spanish Trail Arlington
817 459-5474
From I-20 take Cooper or Little Road north to Arkansas Lane. Park is between two streets
on SW corner of Arkansas and Spanish Trail.
Windmill Hill Preserve Gently rolling, 75 acre preserve with a two
mile primitive hiking trail. This wooded preserve is the home of the Stevie Ray Vaughn
Memorial Bridge at Stewart Branch of Ten Mile Creek. The lack of traction on fairly steep
hills makes this short trail very challenging at times.
Corner of Wintergreen and Main Desoto
972 230-9600
From North J Elmer Weaver Parkway (Highway 67), go south on Main Street to Wintergreen.
Bicycling: The ins-and-outs of the
sport.
