Idling a vehicle for a total of 10 minutes a day uses an average of about 22 gallons of gas per year, as well as polluting the air around your car or truck.  With the rising cost of fuel, you can save a lot of money by simply turning off your vehicle.

By turning your vehicle's engine off when it isn’t moving, you will not only save money on fuel, you will also keep others around you, including children and people with respiratory problems, from breathing unhealthy exhaust fumes.

In fact, idling your vehicle for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your vehicle. Frequent restarting does not damage your vehicle's engine. Forget that old myth.

Why?

The wear on components that restarting the engine causes adds about $10 a year to the cost of driving – money that you'll likely recover several times over in fuel savings from reduced idling.

Prolonged idling reduces the operating life of engine oil by 75%.

One hour of idling is equivalent to 2 hours of driving.  Excessive idling can actually damage your engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs and exhaust systems. In fact, running an engine at low speed causes twice the wear on internal parts compared to driving at regular speeds.

Texans are particularly anxious to avoid heat in summer and cold in winter. Doing so by idling a vehicle costs money for gasoline and further damages our environment.

Carbon dioxide is the primary gas released by idling vehicles and is also one of the main greenhouse gasses causing climate change.

Vehicle idling is a major concern for many businesses, government entities, and industries, particularly those that have fleets of vehicles for moving goods or people. The average long-haul truck idles away up to $1,790 in profits a year.
