We have had some questions about co-housing and eco-villages. In particular, we have been asked many times if cohousing and ecovillages are the same concept. The terms do need qualifying but common usage makes that a difficult task. At first view cohousing projects and ecovillages are very similar; they can be exactly the same. However, an ecovillage normally goes beyond a cohousing community in both size and scope. Yet, an ecovillage is not necessarily cohousing nor is cohousing necessarily an ecovillage. If you go with the Gilmans' definition, very few urban cohousing developments would be considered an ecovillage. Cohousing is often based on sustainable building practices but it does not have to be so. And very few urban cohousing projects are harmlessly integrated into the natural world or built in a manner that they can be successfully continued into the indefinite future. An ecovillage is always based on many sustainable building practices. If the cohousing model is chosen for an ecovillage, it will often contain two (or more) cohousing groups. In conclusion, an ecovillage is not necessarily cohousing nor is cohousing necessarily an ecovillage, particularly when it is urban cohousing. However, when an ecovillage uses the cohousing model to manifest sustainability, it is a good marriage between the two. Please give us your ideas by filling out a quick form here. Some of you may have suggestions for co-housing in Dallas-Fort Worth. If so, fill out the form for DFW co-housing here, too. Let us know your cohousing preference there.
