People generally suffer from two forms of loneliness:
Social loneliness stems from an absence of a social network. People who describe social loneliness refer to feelings of boredom, restlessness, and feeling left out. Everyone needs people for "hanging out." People with an active social life rarely suffer social loneliness. Cohousing will probably solve social loneliness for almost everyone. Emotional loneliness comes from the absence of a close emotional relationship. Even the most socially active person can suffer from this type of loneliness when his/her social network is comprised of superficial acquaintances. People who are describing this type of loneliness speak of feelings of anxiety and emptiness. Those superficial acquaintances that can cure social loneliness won't touch the emotional variety. That explains why people can party for weeks and still feel lonely. Although even one close relationship can cure emotional loneliness for many people, that close relationship is much harder to build than a social network. Cohousing gives you an opportunity to make close friends. Seniors and Loneliness As life goes on, there seems to be more loneliness involved. We retire; our spouse becomes ill or dies, we lose family to illness, death, moves; we lose friends for the same reasons; and we lose driving and other privileges that help us connect to people. None of these happen at one time, of course; they all happen gradually. The net effect, though, is increasing isolation for seniors. Any intentional community or cohousing community can halt isolation and a lot of the loneliness for seniors.
