There is a deep yearning in every human for
compassion and understanding from one's fellow humans and from one's
communities. Cohousing fills that need for many.
Western cultures have lost the spirit of community that once was found in rural towns, churches, and community centers. Modern suburbs, assisted by the American love of the automobile, the decline of rural communities, and the scattering of extended families have produced people who are isolated in their immediate families or with a very few friends. M. Scott Peck, MD, author of The Road Less Traveled writes, "There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community." Humans need authentic community. It is achieved by deep respect for, and true listening to, the needs of other members of the community. When a community exists, people become free enough to interact and share while becoming confidant enough to connect and form social networks. It is possibly the development of confidence and freedom that takes time when building a cohousing community. Another positive aspect of a cohousing
community is its ability to foster socialization--the process of learning to adopt the behavior patterns of
one's community. The degree to which the norms of a particular society or community are adopted determines one's willingness to engage with
others--a trait most humans value. Around 300 cohousing projects have been completed in Europe since the first community was built in Denmark. The intergenerational communities include people of all ages as well as singles, single parents, couples with children, and empty nesters. There are also many communities only for seniors called elder or senior cohousing. Cohousing is a movement back to community.
