Seniors share all the benefits of cohousing that any age receives except the benefits to child-rearing.  Yet there are some benefits that are particularly important to and sometimes even unique to seniors.

1. Loneliness At some time, regardless of how many acquaintances and close friends you had as a young or middle-aged adult, your social life begins to slow down. Children grow up and go their separate ways; friends, relatives, and spouses get ill--some die; driving becomes harder. For whatever reason, our lives become more isolated and we become more lonely. Living in a cohousing or intentional community such as an ecovillage ends the isolation seniors eventually begin to feel.

2. Possible Longer Life Many studies conclude that seniors who have people in their lives for social support and as confidants actually live longer than those who do not.

3. Better Mental Health Social and intimate support, shared hobby areas, planned meditation and quiet areas plus the mental stimulation of activities, make cohousing a better place for your mental health to flourish rather than decline.

4. Better Food  It is hard to cook for one or two people making it easy to start eating out. It is almost impossible to eat out and eat healthy.  Cohousing with common house meals lets you cook occasionally but eat healthy most nights. Some retirees might even get a lunch group going for the common house, too.

5. More Exercise Most seniors consider it easier to  exercise when that time is shared, especially with others who are similar in physical fitness and age. The common areas of a cohousing community usually have walking trails with planned exercise areas in the common house.

6. Physical Safety Children leave clutter around the paths and common house such as skateboards, balls, sleds, bicycles, etc. This clutter is either easy to trip over or hard to navigate around.

6. Shared Life  Living in cohousing or an intentional community such as an ecovillage, allows residents access to share facilities, buying co-ops, common areas, car pooling, work in the community, activities, and more.

7. Quiet Times Senior cohousing also adds a measure of quietness that will not be available in intergenerational cohousing. For example, the dining room will be quieter without children.

8. Earth and Heir Friendly You will be leaving a greener earth to your children and grandchildren. Many heirs consider this much more important than Mom/Dad leaving money. But if it is money they want, you will be able to leave more of it to them from the the very real monetary savings garnered by living in cohousing.

9. Intergenerational Communities If only being with people your own age is not appealing to you, then consider living in an intergenerational community--people of all ages live here.
