By now you may really want to move into cohousing, but you
are not sure about moving into senior cohousing.
You may be over 65 and retired or retiring soon. Hopefully you still have an active lifestyle and plan to continue that lifestyle. Or, maybe you are a baby-boomer who is over 55 or getting close to that age. Your children are grown and you definitely lead an active, healthy lifestyle. You want more time for the fun part of life--without worrying about the large home and house you now inhabit. Why should you move into senior cohousing rather than an intergenerational community? After all, you are not old yet!! If you have an idea that senior cohousing precludes an active lifestyle, you need to readjust your thinking. The vast majority of people who move into senior cohousing are active physically and mentally. The best part is that the members of a senior cohousing community have features in place that will help them stay active. Seniors who live with friends have other people joining them to create a more active lifestyle. Whereas it might not be the same lifestyle of the 25-year-old in the intergenerational community nearby, it is probably more active than any of them would lead on their own. Think about it... When you have traveling companions, you are more likely to travel. When you have exercising companions, you are more likely to exercise. When you have activities planned for many times of the day, you will do more and even your mind will stay more active. People who exercise, eat healthy meals, have friends and confidants, and stay active mentally, live longer and with better mental facilities than those who do not have those benefits. Living in a community of friends certainly allows you to live in a more intimate manner with others. You don't suffer the isolation that leads to social and emotional loneliness. While it is true that retirees can participate in more activities than those who are still working, almost all seniors can benefit from living in senior cohousing.
