Origins Cohousing, Ecohousing, How Did It Start?
Senior cohousing is like intergenerational cohousing in most ways. However, senior cohousing does have some features that are unique. They are:
1. Each family has at least one person who is age 55 or over in order to reside in the senior community--or--each family has at least one person who is age 62 or older.
2. The homes are built using universal design and can fit the lifestyle of an active senior or one who needs accessibility for a walker or wheelchair--now or in the future.
3. Common areas are carefully planned to support wheelchairs and walkers in the future.
4. Common facilities are planned and built using universal design to assure use by residents with all levels of physical ability.
5. Structures are one story unless an elevator is provided, although second story units are sometimes included for the living quarters to home health aides.
6. There are no play areas unless there is a very small area set aside for visiting grandchildren.
7. When children are in a community, parents often want to restrict media in the common house. For example, they may not want to have a television there for fear children will watch inappropriate shows when their parents are not present. There are no such restrictions in senior cohousing.
8. Residents know a time will come when their neighbors need their support--or vice-versa--in maintaining their independence.
