Warranties are the key to ensuring that your renewable energy system will
be repaired if something should malfunction during the warranty periods.
For example: Most PV systems eligible for solar rebate programs must carry
a full warranty, not limited warranty, for a specified length of time. The
time depends on the rebating company, of course. Your renewable energy warranty should cover parts and labor including the
cost of removing any defective component, shipping it to and from the
manufacturer, and reinstalling the component after repair or replacement.
Even if the manufacturer's warranty is less than the specified time frame,
the system contractor must provide you with a full warranty for the time
specified. This makes sense as the utility provider does not want to give a rebate
for a system that will not be producing electricity. Be certain you know who is responsible for honoring the various
warranties associated with your system. Get that information from the
installation contractor. Also know the financial arrangements, such as contractor's bonds, that
ensure the warranty will be honored in the event the contractor does not
