Although it is now the fifth largest city in Texas, Fort Worth was founded as a small outpost for the US Army on June 6, 1849. The fort was named Camp Worth after Army General William Worth. Later that summer Major Ripley Arnold moved the post to a bluff overlooking the mouth of Clear Fork. The US War Department officially named the post "Fort Worth" in November of 1849.
