Air Conditioners: Off or On?

Which is more energy efficient for a work day:

Allowing the air conditioner to run all day at a higher temperature

or

turning it off when you leave home?

When you turn the air off in the morning three things happen:

1. The air in your home heats up.

2. The walls and the furnishings in your home also heat up.

3. The humidity rises.

When you return at night, it will take your air conditioner longer to lower the temperature and humidity to a comfortable level.

The continuous operation of your unit is actually very efficient, though. Without all the starts and stops of a typical cycling unit, you are running your system at its peak efficiency.

Turning your unit off in the morning when you leave home and back on when you return at night will normally save you more money.

Try it and see how much your temperature rises while you are gone. If it is just a few degrees, turn it off!

The question might be: How uncomfortable can you be for a few minutes to save a day's worth of electricity bills?
