Your home is a total system, just as
your body is a total system.
Green building is a systems approach to building and renovating homes for energy efficiency, good indoor air quality, health, comfort, materials use, and sustainability. What does this mean? The systems approach to green homes recognizes the interaction of windows, attics, foundations, mechanical equipment, and all other components and assemblies. It also recognizes that changes in one or a few components can dramatically change how other components perform. A home is a very complex and interrelated total system made up of people, the environment, and the building itself. The people who live in the house
interact with their home and the local environment and, by extension, the
global environment. Building houses, then, is about the health, safety,
and welfare of the people who live in them as well as the welfare and
sustainability of both the local and global environment.
It is also about the useful service of the building itself. Recognizing and taking advantage of these facts, and applying appropriate advances in technology to components, can result in cost and performance payoffs that are more than energy-efficient, they are truly green.
