Air conditioners perform two basic functions: Heat removal and moisture removal. Although it might seem that heat removal is the only important function of the two, moisture removal is also paramount to comfort during the hot months. Refrigeration air conditioning
equipment normally reduces the humidity of the air processed by the
system. How? As air cools, it loses its ability to
hold moisture. Your air-conditioning system works like the dew you see on
the grass on a summer morning or the way an ice-cold drink condenses water
on the outside of a glass. The evaporator coil is below the dew
point. It removes water vapor from the processed air and sends that water
to a drain. By removing water vapor from the cooled space, it lowers the
relative humidity. Dry air is more comfortable in the
summer. In fact, the lower the humidity level of your home in
summer, the more comfortable you will feel at a given temperature. A properly
operating and sized air conditioning unit should also lower the
humidity in your home. Oversized
air-conditioning systems are a problem in Dallas-Fort Worth because they
do not remove enough humidity from your home in the summer. There is a second
problem, though. An oversized unit repeatedly cycles off and on. When your
unit is cycling, you are not running your system at its peak efficiency
and you are actually using more energy to operate the system. Call Terry Jensen at 972 251-1532 or 817 545-0140. Back to Humidity Directory
