With Texas springs, summers, and falls as hot as they are, lower energy bills are a high priority for people in the DFW metroplex.

In a climate as hot as Texas, heating your home is less of an issue than cooling. If you're looking to remodel for energy efficiency and cut utility costs, you must start with cooling.

Heat is coming into your home from the attic, which is "an oven on the top of your house."

Compounding the problem is the fact that in most homes, air-conditioning ducts are installed in the attic. So the system must create cool air in the hottest part of the house.

Although a radiant barrier is  a step in the right direction,  to truly see a reduction in cooling costs, you must cool the attic itself. This involves spraying an open-cell foam insulation against the top of the attic, sealing it to prevent transfer of heat from the roof into the open spaces of the attic. Outside ventilation sources are closed off, and cool-air ventilation is supplied by leaks made in the air-conditioning system.

This brings the attic into what's called the "thermal envelope" of a house, and it's effective.

It also turns your attic into good storage. You can even store books in this conditioned attic space with good results.
