No matter how "green" the products used or
how energy-efficient the home, size does matter. It is all about the
carbon footprint.
Generally, the combined carbon footprint of a very energy-efficient (even zero energy) but large home using the latest in green technology is bigger than the carbon footprint of a small, traditionally-built home. Before building a new green home, Jim Sargent recommends that future home owners read Sarah Susanka's The Not So Big House. Susanka's first sentence is "So many houses, so big with so little soul."
