Homes built today are tighter (tighter homes have fewer holes and cracks and, thus, fewer air changes) than homes of years gone by. When homes were first built to be energy efficient and more airtight, many of those homes were a closed system of air contaminated by mold and/or chemicals that were emitted from paint, glues, carpets, particleboard, and even insulation. Experts say Americans spend between 85% and 90% or their time indoors. The air inside a new home and a newly remodeled home or apartment could be more polluted than outside air, at times even endangering the health of its occupants. It pays big health dividends to check out the air quality of your home, especially when you remodel or buy an existing home. A series of articles about air quality will come soon.
