If you have breaks in your thermal envelope, you are bleeding conditioned air. Think of it another way. You are air-conditioning and heating your neighborhood. The cheapest and best remedy for this is to have a blower door test, then hire a professional to caulk and weather-strip your home. Why a blower door test? This test measures infiltration and shows where infiltration occurs. Without it, you have a slim chance of finding all the small breaks in your thermal envelope. Why hire a professional? As usual, a professional does a better job.
But more important: Since
any plan to tighten the thermal envelope of a home should also include an
inspection of the home's ventilation needs, a super-tight home is best
examined by a remodeling consultant or professional. If you can not afford a professional, be at home for the blower door test to see where the leaks are. Then caulk, caulk, caulk and caulk some more. In general caulking and weather
stripping will pay for itself within one year in energy savings. Caulking and weather stripping will
also help eliminate drafts which makes your home feel warmer when it’s cold
outside. Contact Terry Jensen at 972 251-1532 or 817 545-0140.
