Communities
An intergenerational community is composed of families, single parents, singles, empty nesters, grandparents raising grandchildren--all ages and all forms of residency. From babies to grandparents, an intergenerational community embraces them all. Intergenerational communities offer the diversity of age ranges and opinions, while providing social exposure to children, young adults, middleaged, and older residents. All ages are enriched by these interactions. It is a welcome contrast to new suburban subdivisions which all too often only house couples with children, leaving grandparents and young marrieds in another world. In intergenerational communities, everyone takes part in a community comprised of people of all ages who interact through everything from community service to offering or receiving child care. For example, an intergenerational community often has retirees available for after-school care of children of working parents as well as older residents to take on the role of surrogate grandparents or advisers to younger individuals or couples within the community. Although this is a choice of both residents, it also benefits both in different ways. Another example arises from the practice of leaving cars at the perimeter of the property. This requires walking within the community and interacting with all neighbors while walking. Thus, many caring eyes increases safety for children at play within the community itself.
