Oak Cliff Residents in 1950s

Please join us as we prepare to make our community dreams come true.

One of the hallmarks of cohousing in an ecovillage is energy-efficient homes within a green community.

1946 Redbird Airport (now known as Dallas Executive Airport) opened in Oak Cliff. Although Redbird Airport was primarily designated as a field for private planes, it was also believed there would be times when Love Field would not ve able to accommodate all of its traffic. If that happened, Redbird Airport would serve as an alternate commercial airport.

1947 The first families moved into Wynnewood, an 820-acre community in Oak Cliff. The subdivision was the first post-WWII community in the Dallas area and even the nation. Wynnewood was a project of Angus Wynne, Jr. whose goal was to build mass-produced, but high-quality homes, in a complete community. Wynne battled many of the material shortages of his day for completion of this project.

1948 Wynnewood Village, a 27-acre shopping center, opened. By providing everything from a bank to a theater and from retail stores to medical offices, this center completed Angus Wynne's goal of an inclusive community.

1950 Sunset High won the state football championship. Sunset beat Houston Reagan 14 to 6 to win the championship.

1954 Oak Cliff's Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in oak Cliff's Methodist Hospital. The lyrics of his song Tick Tock are engraved in the bricks of DART's Hampton Station.

1956 Oak Cliff streetcars were shut down.

1956 Oak Cliff voted itself dry.

1957 The great tornado hits Oak Cliff. It damaged property in North Oak Cliff and Wynnewood, although it was "selective." Ironically, the tornado shattered some homes while completely missing the home next door.

1961 Bishop Dunn High opened.

1961 Unitarian-Universalist fellowship was formed in Oak Cliff.

1963 Lee Harvey Oswald was captured at Texas Theater. At that time, Oswald lived in a rented room at 1026 Beckley. Actually, Oswald lived in three different residences in Oak Cliff: 602-604 Elsbeth, 214 Neely, and the last one near the intersection of Beckley and Zang.

1970 Mountain View College was opened as part of the Dallas County Community College District.
