What Is Shared, Private in Retirement  Cohousing?

New: Wildflower Village

In a senior cohousing community, each unit is individually owned. When you shut your door, you shut out the rest of the community and the entire Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex--just as in any private home.

The individual homes often have some private outdoor space, too. Thus owners can enjoy privacy both indoors and outdoors whenever private times are desired.

What is shared?

1. The common house is shared.

2. The common spaces such as a workshop or gazebo are shared.

3. Meals are shared on some regular basis. However, seniors do have a choice about attending meals. They can attend these meals or not, as they desire.

4. Governing the community is shared. Most communities have a monthly meeting and expect at least one member of a household to make most of the meetings. It is also common for the board of directors to change regularly so no one person or group of people builds up power.

5. Some duties are shared. What these will be and how they will be shared is determined by the cohousing community.

An ecovillage can consist of several cohousing communities. These cohousing communities might also share common spaces. For example, Hidden Lake Village in the Dallas-Fort Worth area has several cohousing communities in the village. There is a small lake on the property. That lake and the creek which feeds it will be placed in a conservation easement for all residents to enjoy.
