Raising Vegetarian Children: A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony.
by Joanne Stepaniak, Vesanto Melina If
I were only going to buy one book on raising a vegetarian child, this
would be the book. It has excellent nutrition information and ample
recipes. Better yet it covers respect for your child's decision to eat
vegetarian, support from you in coping with an essentially non-vegetarian
world, and your leadership role in helping him eat "healthy
vegetarian." Finally, since much of the book focuses on family
relationships and nutrition, it is an excellent guide for raising
children, vegetarian and omnivore alike.

| Child Safe: A Practical
Guide for Preventing Childhood Injuries by Mark A Brandenburg, MD Mark
Brandenburg, M.D., is a full-time emergency physician at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. He
writes, "I'm not waving a red flag to scare you. Rather, I hope that being aware of
potential problems and the steps to prevent them will make you a mare confident and safe
parent. Most parents acquire child-safety knowledge in bits and pieces from friends and
relatives. Brandenburg's book gathers all that information into one easy-to-use volume.
Although this can be a frightening book to read, it is an excellent gift for new parents
and "seasoned" parents, too.

A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian by
Judy Krizmanic
This casual book was written for teens. It covers all the basics of
becoming vegetarian from what it means to be vegetarians to dealing with the
reactions of family and friends to helping teens make certain they get the
nutrients needed to be healthy. It has a good chapter on surviving at school and
another on surviving sticky situations. The book also has simple recipes for the
types of food teens love. This is a comprehensive book and a wonderful gift for
teen-age vegetarians and vegans.

| The Yale Guide to Children's
Nutrition, William V. Tamborlane, M.D., Editor If you are
worried about what your child is eating or if your child is eating, this book
will set the record straight for you. It has an excellent explanation of fats and which
fats to include in your child's diet. Yale takes your child from birth thru teen years
while addressing problems such as cleft palate, diabetes and acne. In short, this is the
first nutrition book you should buy as a parent. Although some information in the book is
becoming outdated, and this will happen with any nutrition book, this overall excellent
nutrition primer is a must for the libraries of all parents.
