Vegetarian Family

DFW Vegetarian Education Network (VegNet)  and Dallas-Fort Worth Vegetarian Happenings website.

The purpose of Vegetarian Family is to support the lifestyle of vegetarians with children by:
  • Allowing veggie kids to meet other children who are vegetarian.
  • Promoting interaction of veggie parents.
  • Hosting picnics, potlucks, Sunday buffets, excursions, and outdoor activities for children of all ages.
  • Providing parental support and assistance.
  • Education.

Family participation at any event is welcome. At the events, some families sit separately; others sit at a long table with other vegetarians. The choice is yours.

Many families attending these functions are investigating the vegetarian lifestyle or making a gradual change to vegetarianism. Others are attending because some, but not all, family members are vegetarians.

Although we welcome your entire family: vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores alike; we do ask that no flesh be brought to our tables.

At indoor functions and restaurants, ask for the "vegetarian group" at the door. At park or other outdoor functions, look for the balloons and/or signs.

When an outdoor function is scheduled, an alternative indoor plan is usually given (but not always) in case of unfriendly weather. Unfriendly weather is defined as any precipitation or a forecast for a high temperature of less than 55 degrees.  If no alternative is given, unfriendly weather cancels the event.

Vegetarian: the compassionate and healthy way to eat!

Raising Vegetarian Children: A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony.

by Joanne Stepaniak, Vesanto Melina

If I were only going to buy one book on raising a vegetarian child, this would be the book. It has excellent nutrition information and ample recipes. Better yet it covers respect for your child's decision to eat vegetarian, support from you in coping with an essentially non-vegetarian world,  and your leadership role in helping him eat "healthy vegetarian." Finally, since much of the book focuses on family relationships and nutrition, it is an excellent guide for raising children, vegetarian and omnivore alike.

A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian by Judy Krizmanic

This casual book was written for teens. It covers all the basics of becoming vegetarian from what it means to be vegetarian to dealing with the reactions of family and friends to helping teens make certain they get the nutrients needed to be healthy. It has a good chapter on surviving at school and another on surviving sticky situations. The book also has recipes for the types of food teens love. This is a comprehensive book and a wonderful gift for teen-age vegetarians and vegans. Although this book is out-of-print, you can still buy a copy (cheaply, too).
