There are several safety steps that can be followed when washing fruits and vegetables. Michael Greger, MD, says all greens should be washed under running water. FDA says the following steps should be taken to wash fruits and vegetables: Steps
for Washing: 1.
Before working with any foods, hands should be washed with soap and water.
Also, make sure preparation areas are sanitary. 2.
Under clean, running water, rub fruits and vegetables briskly with your
hands to remove dirt and surface microorganisms. 3.
Produce with a firm skin or hard rind like carrots, potatoes, melons or
squash may be scrubbed with a vegetable brush and water. 4.
Discard the outer leaves of leafy vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage
before washing. 5.
Dry with a paper towel rather than a cloth towel which can spread germs.
Greens, such as spinach, chard, kale, and collards should be cooked while
wet, immediately after washing. Meat & Dairy If
you live in a family where someone still eats meat or dairy, keep all
cutting boards separate and sterilize everything often! |
