Sustainable Sunday is a campaign from the Sierra Club's National Sustainable Consumption Committee to promote environmentally helpful food choices.

The basic Sierra Club message is to eat foods which are:

  • Plant-based
  • Organic when possible
  • Locally grown if practical

Why? Because your choice of plant-based food that is also organic and locally grown has a long-lasting and immediate effect on our planet. It is a direct environmental aid one individual can make to the environment.

Food choices are also part of the  Sustainable Sunday concept. Sustainable Sunday sets aside one day a week to do all of those earth-friendly actions all of us should do each day but often can not do.

On that day (and other days) you can:
1. Eat plant-based meals.
2. Hike instead of shop.
3. Walk/Bike instead of drive.
4. Take public transportation or carpool.
5  Help a child understand sustainability.
6. Learn to can or preserve locally grown, organic food.
7. Start a worm garden.
8. Visit the farmer's market.
9. Start an organic vegetable garden.
10. Adjust your heating or cooling to use less energy.
11. Visit an organic farm.
12. Join an organic co-op

It is important to make Sustainable Sunday fun. In that light, Sierra Club will be sponsoring plant-based meals in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex as well as other areas of north Texas. In keeping with health, we will usually walk it off that afternoon.  Most lunches will be followed by an urban dayhike at a nearby park or natural area.

Involve your family and friends in Sustainable Sunday. This also adds to the fun.

There will be a Sierra Singles and Earth Singles table at each Sustainable Sunday event.
